Still time to invite to Christmas Eve services!

Scott Ridout | Dec 17, 2012

There is no better time of the year to invite people to join you at church than Christmas Eve.  No better time.

At Sun Valley, we began doing Christmas Eve services when we met at Mesquite Junior High.  We were a tiny little church back then – about 250 strong – and having a Christmas Eve services was at best inconvenient.  After all we have set up everything on the morning of Dec. 24th, have services and then pray that some would stick around afterward to tear things back down (Oh the thrills of doing “church in a box”!).  And yet people would come out to the woodwork to be at church – because there is something about focusing on Christ at Christmas.

Over the years, the Sun Valley Christmas Eve tradition has gotten bigger and bigger. This year we have more options than ever before – which means you have more opportunity than ever before to invite your friends, neighbors, relatives and coworkers.

I have done lots of things to try to get the people in my life to come Christmas eve.  We used to have a football game that day (we called it the Tinsel Bowl) where a lot of us would bring friends to play football and then I would invite everyone to meet us at the school for Christmas eve services (In fact, one year, I broke a rib in that game and then had to speak – I think that was the last year I played ). It is not beyond me to try to bribe my neighbors to come.  I have offered my neighbors dinner, Krispy Kreme donuts and yes, even a “beer helmet” (if you don’t know this story, listen to week two of “Out of the Box”) to get them to come.  I just know that if people hear the story of God’s love for them, something is going to happen.

So this year, make your best efforts to invite people to come.  We have more services than ever – 17 (7 last year) and more campuses (3).  Choose what works best for you, but come!

Here is the line up:

In Gilbert, all services for December 22-24 are identical Christmas Eve services.
The times are:
Saturday, Dec. 22 - 4:30 p.m. & 6:00 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 23 – 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m. & 11:59 a.m.
Monday Dec. 24 – 3:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m. & 6:00 p.m.
(We graciously ask that we all take two steps to ensure a great experience for everyone. First, in order to limit congestion, carpool!  Second, we would ask that as many of us as possible who will not have guest attending to attend the Saturday and Sunday services. This will ensure we have room for our guests on Monday.  Thank you!)

In Tempe, we will have normal Sunday morning services at 9:00 a.m. (Traditional) and 10:30 a.m. (Modern) that will be Christmas focused, but different than the Christmas Eve services.
On Monday, December 24th we will have three services:
3:00 p.m. (Traditional), 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (Modern).

In Cass Grande, we will have Christmas Eve services at Mission Heights High School on Sunday December 23 at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
On December 24th, join us at the Paramount Theatre (420 North Florence Street) for a unique community wide Christmas Eve celebration.  Services will be at 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 pm.

Regardless of which service you choose, there is one thing you can be sure of – your guest will hear the good news of the love of God for all of us. It will be a great experience for everyone!  So join us!
